Why your custom photo badge reel looks blurry + how to fix it
A badge reel face is about 32 mm across — roughly the size of a shirt button. If your photo looks soft after printing, it is almost never the print: it is that the picture was chosen for a phone screen, not for a 32 mm circle. Faces in a group shot, busy backgrounds and heavy filters all fall apart at that size. Here is how to pick one that stays sharp.
Rule 1: one subject, filling the frame
At 32 mm, a face occupying 20% of a group photo is about three millimetres wide. No printer can rescue that. Choose a single subject — one pet, one child, one person — with the head or the key detail filling at least 60% of the frame. A close-up that feels too tight on your phone is usually exactly right for a reel.
Rule 2: simple background, good light
Busy backgrounds are the second most common cause of a “blurry” result. What reads as a nice garden or a cluttered kitchen at full size turns to mush when shrunk. Plain walls, open sky, or a softly blurred backdrop all work. Natural daylight beats indoor lighting, and avoid heavy filters — they crush the detail that survives the shrink.
Rule 3: eyes are the whole point
On pets and people alike, sharp eyes carry the image. If the eyes are soft, the whole print looks soft no matter how good the rest is. Avoid motion blur, night-mode photos and anything shot at distance with digital zoom.
Resolution: what you actually need
For a crisp 32 mm print at 300 dpi you need roughly 380 pixels across the printed circle — so an original of 600×600 pixels or larger gives comfortable headroom. Most phone photos clear this easily; the risk is a cropped screenshot or a heavily compressed messaging image, which is where prints go soft.
Crop for a circle, not a square
The reel face is round, so the corners of your photo get cut. Anything important — an ear, a paw, the top of a head — should sit inside the middle area. Frame it as if a circle is already over it, not a square.
If you are using words instead
- Name, or name plus credentials (RN, BSN, LPN) — safe and always readable.
- Keep it short. Around 8–12 characters stays legible; a full sentence becomes a smudge.
- Avoid thin script fonts at this size. A clean sans-serif wins.
See it before you commit
The honest answer to “will my photo look good?” is: look at the preview. Our customiser shows the circular crop and the live placement on the product as you upload or type, so what you approve is exactly what goes into production — no guessing from a rectangular thumbnail.
Quick questions
Why does my custom photo badge reel look blurry?
Usually the photo was too wide or too busy for a 32 mm print: the subject occupied a small part of the frame, so detail is lost when it is shrunk. Pick a close-up with one subject and a plain background.
What resolution should my photo be?
600×600 pixels or larger. That comfortably covers a 32 mm print at 300 dpi.
Can I put text instead of a photo?
Yes — a name or name plus credentials works best. Keep it to roughly 8–12 characters and choose a clean, non-script font.
